Operating Instructions, Initial ICOM Setup
  1. Empty radio memories    40 - 46
  2. Set the radio address to    48H
  3. Set the radio baud rate to 4800
  4. Nett the radio +/- 20hz
  5. Plug COOEE into the rear of the ICOM using the accessory socket and the CAT socket.







Operating Instructions, Initial Selcall Setup
  1. Load your own four digit selcall number AND the four digit selcall number you wish to call into Memory 40. The leftside four digits are My selcall number.The rightside four digits are the Target selcall number.
  2. Load the frequency or channel you wish to use into Memory 41.
  3. Reload COOEE or cycle the power on the ICOM.



Loading the Selcall numbers into Memory 40 is not optional, COOEE needs valid selcall numbers to work with.
If the memory values are altered COOEE must be reloaded, or cycle the radio power, to pick up the new values.
The Selcall values are stored in EEPROM memory in COOEE.
Once COOEE has been connected to an ICOM and valid selcall values loaded, it can then be used as a selcall encoder/decoder on any other radio.

Operating Instructions, Using Selcall

To send a selcall:

Send a selcall by pressing the SEND switch.


Receiving a selcall :
If you receive a sellcall the RED led will blink then the RED and GREEN leds will blink continuously. Control line D12 will go high for 1 second. The senders selcall ID will be loaded into Memory 42 for later redisplay, and COOEE will send a revertive tone sequence. (Memory 42 is cleared at powerup/reload.)
The beeper will beep and the LEDs will blink untill PTT is triggered.

If you have a freq > 100Mhz loaded into Memory 45, upon receipt of a selcall the ICOM will also send a revertive tone on that frequency, typically it would be a VHF or UHF FM freq, to alert a handheld radio that an HF selcall has been received. For IC706 MKIIG radios Menu item 30 VSEND SEL must be set to OFF, otherwise PTT will not key up on the VHF freq.

To send a Beacon call, put 1000001 in Memory 51, and all sent selcalls become Beacon calls.




Selcall scanning.

If the AUX line in pulled low, COOEE will scan the following memory channels in order 41,46,47,48 and 49. Empty channels will not be scanned. The default selcall preamble is 2 seconds, with the call channel lodaed into MEM41.
Each additional channel (46 - 49) adds 1 second to the selcall preamble.  With all five selcall scan channels loaded the preamble is 6 seconds. 




Full Microprocessor Reset.

Holding the SEND line low whilst rebooting COOEE resets the EEPROM values to:
CAT address 48 hex
My Call 1234
Target Call 5678

        








Pushing the switch to the SEND position has one function.
  1. Send a selcall or send a Beacon call

Pushing the switch to the RELOAD position has three functions:
  1. Read in new updated Selcall numbers and
  2. Clears MEM 42 & MEM 43 (last received selcall number) and
  3. Reset COOEE.

LED status indicators:

Green on
Microprocessor has booted sucessfully.

Green blinking
Receiving a Selcall Preamble.

Red & Green both blinking quickly continuously
Have Received my Primary selcall number. The senders Selcall ID is loaded into Memory 42.

Red   Comes on for a few seconds whilst the microprocessor is booting up.
            Comes on whilst sending a selcall. ie. Tx is active.
            Comes on breifly whilst a Beacon call or Secondary selcall is being received.

Loading selcall numbers & radio CAT address via Serial Port

 In the event COOEE is to be used with a non-Icom radio the selcall numbers can be loaded via serial port using a RS232 to TTL level converter eg.MAX232.

1 select 9600 baud on a terminal program
2 type selcall (lowercase) then hit Enter (or Line Feed ASCII 10)
3 enter CAT address (normally 48 is the default)
4 enter the Selcall numbers as directed.
5 reset COOEE to pick up the changes.
